Diego A. Casas

About me

My name is Diego A. Casas. I’m an engineer and computer enthusiast. I was born and raised in Barranquilla, a city in Colombia, known as Shakira’s hometown. However, I currently live in Brazil, where I’m pursuing a Ph.D. in water resources and environmental engineering at the Federal University of Paraná. I’m passionate about waves 🌊 since I realized that their study comprises mathematics, physics, and computing—three areas of knowledge that I like very much.

Apart from my work as an engineer-scientist, I do coding for fun. Yes, I already do programming at work, but it’s not the same. I also like gaming; my favorite genre is probably survival horror, and recently, I’m linking Project Zomboid. Although I don't watch many series and movies, I’m currently watching Detective Conan, an anime series known for being on air for almost 3 decades (1996–present). When I’m not in front of a screen, I enjoy reading—even though I don’t do it as often as I used to. I’m a fan of Sherlock Holmes and mystery fiction in general.

Background

In early 2020, I graduated as a civil engineer from Universidad del Norte in Colombia. After graduating, I had the opportunity to work for a consulting firm in water resources engineering. By the end of 2021, I moved to Brazil to pursue a master's degree in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR).

I completed my master's degree in 2023. My dissertation was an assessment of the influence of waves on the transport and fate of sediments from submarine sewage outfalls by employing coupled wave current modeling. During my master's studies, I developed a solid foundation in hydrodynamic, wave, and sediment transport modeling in Delft3D, as well as data processing using Python. I also became keenly interested in the environmental implications of water waves.

Immediately after completing my master’s degree, I enrolled for a doctoral degree at the same university. Currently, I am investigating the role of waves in the exchange of momentum and energy across the air-water interface. Due to their wave fields of lower complexity, I decided to study these phenomena in freshwater lakes. However, I have been trying to conduct laboratory studies on wind wave generation in order to have more controlled conditions.

Short bio

Portrait of Diego Casas

Diego Casas is a doctoral student in the Graduate Program of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering (PPGERHA) at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) in Curitiba, Brazil, where he also completed his master’s studies (2023). He is a civil engineer who graduated from Universidad del Norte, Colombia (2020), and worked on consultancy projects in water resources engineering. His research is on the effects of waves on environmental processes such as the transport and fate of constituents and the exchange of momentum at the air-water interface.
